Management of a grid infrastructure in GLITE with Virtualization

Abstract

A solution for controlling and managing a GLITE grid infrastructure can be the usage of virtualization software like XEN. The elements of a GLITE installation can be realized as virtual machines which then can be deployed throughout the grid infrastructure as needed, reducing significantly the cost of their maintenance and management. We have benchmarked and compared virtualized vs non-virtualized GLITE elements to build criteria for discerning when it is better to use virtualization. Finally we describe our XEN based production environment through which we create and deploy virtual machines across our infrastructure.
